December at Burleigh Surf Apartments is an easy family Christmas, with the beach across the road and the north end’s own carols a short walk away. This guide covers three things worth planning for a December stay: the local events, where to book Christmas dinner before it fills, and what is actually open on Christmas Day, which lands on Friday this year.

What Christmas events are on around North Burleigh?

The one to build your December around is right on our doorstep. North Burleigh Carols by the Sea is a free community carols night at Ed Hardy Park, next to the North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club, a short stroll north along the beach path from us. It runs as an afternoon-into-evening event, with children’s activities, food trucks and market stalls from around 4pm and the carols, community choirs and live music from about 6pm. The exact December date is confirmed each year on the official site closer to the season, so check it when you book and plan your evening around it.

For a bigger night out, the City of Gold Coast puts on the free Mayor’s Christmas Carols in early December, usually at HOTA in the Surfers Paradise parklands with a full orchestra and a name lineup. And about 12 minutes south of us, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary runs its Wild Christmas season through December, with festive lights, Santa and the Blinky Bill’s Christmas Wish show, typically running daily until 24 December. Both confirm their December dates on their own sites, so lock them in as you plan the week.

For the doorstep carols, arrive early, spread a picnic rug on the grass at Ed Hardy Park and let the kids play on the sand before the stage starts. Parking around North Burleigh gets tight on carols night, so being able to walk down from our door instead of circling for a space is a real advantage on the evening.

Where do we go for Christmas dinner, and what books out?

Here is the honest version: Christmas Day dining on the coast is limited and it books out early, so decide your plan in November. Many Burleigh restaurants close on Christmas Day, including Burleigh Pavilion above the beach, which opens every day of the year except 25 December. The venues that do open for a Christmas Day lunch, mostly larger hotel restaurants and clubs putting on a set festive menu, take bookings weeks in advance and fill fast, so if a sit-down Christmas lunch matters to your group, reserve it as soon as menus are released.

The plan that never lets you down is to cook in. Every apartment has a full kitchen, and our undercover barbecue and dining area suits a long, slow seafood lunch with the whole group. Buy your prawns, ham and trimmings on Christmas Eve while the shops are still open, and Christmas Day looks after itself. Guests keep mentioning how easy a self-catered Christmas is here with the beach a few steps away between courses. One tip for a seafood Christmas: order or collect your prawns and bugs on Christmas Eve morning rather than the afternoon, when the queues at the local seafood outlets stretch out the door.

What is actually open on Christmas Day?

The short answer is the beach, and not much else, so plan around it. Burleigh Beach is patrolled by lifeguards from 8am to 5pm on Christmas Day, and the flags sit directly across the road, which makes a morning swim the natural centrepiece of the day. The foreshore parks and the coastal path are open and free, so a walk to Justins Park or up to the North Burleigh headland fills the morning nicely.

On the closed list: Coles and Woolworths shut on Christmas Day across Queensland, and most shops, cafes and casual restaurants close with them. They reopen on Boxing Day, Saturday 26 December, when the shopping centres run their sales, with the big Boxing Day crowds at Pacific Fair about 10 minutes north at Broadbeach if anyone is chasing a bargain. The practical rule for a December stay is simple. Treat Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December, as your shopping day, stock the apartment fridge, and you will not be caught out on the day itself.

FAQs about a December stay at Burleigh Surf

Is the beach patrolled on Christmas Day?

Yes. Burleigh Beach is patrolled by professional lifeguards seven days a week from 8am to 5pm, Christmas Day included, and the flags are directly across the road from our front door. A Christmas morning swim before lunch is one of the easiest traditions to start on a Burleigh stay.

What is open on Christmas Day around Burleigh?

The beach and the foreshore parks are your main options. Supermarkets like Coles and Woolworths close on Christmas Day and most shops follow, so stock up on Christmas Eve. A handful of venues open for a booked Christmas lunch, but casual walk-in dining is limited on the day itself.

Can we cook Christmas lunch in the apartment?

Yes, and it is the most reliable plan. Every apartment has a full kitchen, and the undercover barbecue and dining area is there for a relaxed seafood lunch with the group. Buy your prawns and trimmings on Christmas Eve while the shops are open, and you are set for the day.

What is there to do on New Year’s Eve?

The Gold Coast runs fireworks displays on New Year’s Eve, Thursday 31 December 2026, with Surfers Paradise the biggest. From Burleigh you can watch a local display or head north on the tram. Book any NYE dinner well ahead, as the popular beachfront tables go early.

A North Burleigh Christmas comes down to a morning swim, carols up the path and a long lunch on the balcony, with the shops sorted the day before. December books out early here, so reserve your dates direct with us and use our Gold Coast attractions guide to fill the days between Christmas and New Year.
